Major Gift Bestowed to the FSAA

29 September 2016

Lucius Belzile estate makes a generous gift of $670,725

Langis and Mireille Belzile, brother and sister of the late Lucius Belzile, visited the FSAA on August 23 to bestow the final cheque of a legacy gift in keeping with the last wishes of the FSAA graduate.  Thanks to this major donation, made official in 2014, the Faculty has been able to establish the Fonds de la relève scientifique famille Lucius-Belzile de la FSAA (the Lucius-Belzile family fund for the development of young scientists at the FSAA). The objective of this fund, the first ever in the Faculty's history, is to promote the development of young scientists while providing financial support for students continuing on to graduate studies in agriculture and the food sciences. Mr. Belzile was an agronomist who graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences in 1968. He also obtained is master's degree in plant physiology in 1972. Specialized in forage plants, he worked as a researcher at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada during his career. “A true gift from heaven” For Jean-Claude Dufour, dean of the FSAA, the gift is invaluable. “Mr. Lucius Belzile is a graduate of the Faculty who decided to give back to his alma mater after dedicating his life to research. His donation is a true gift from heaven that will help promote the development of the next generation of scientists.” Mr. Langis Belzile, for his part, was delighted to see that the donation will be long-lasting, which was his brother's greatest desire, and that it will allow a large number of students to pursue studies at the graduate level.
