DEC-BAC agreements and bridging provisions

DEC-BAC agreements and bridging provisions

Université Laval is a leader in the recognition of technical DECs. This skills recognition takes either the form of a DEC-BAC agreement or a "bridge".

The primary objective of DEC-BAC agreements and bridges is to reduce the overlapping of knowledge due to material already learned during technical training. Reducing overlap ensures greater coherence between college and university programs within the same family, as well as better consistency in training.

DEC-BAC agreements

A DEC-BAC agreement is an agreement between Université Laval and a college to link a technical training program to a bachelor's degree program within the same field of study.

The purpose of a DEC-BAC agreement is to:

  • Recognize in the university program the skills acquired in a technical training program
  • Avoid knowledge overlap
  • Ensure a smooth transition from one program to another while adjusting the college and university training if necessary
  • Provide greater consistency regarding training continuity and more robust learning
  • Allow students to obtain two diplomas in a shorter timeframe
  • Reduce the duration of study by one year

Bridges

A bridge provides recognition of courses from a technical DEC in a bachelor's degree program in a related field. Based on the knowledge base acquired during the technical training, bridges can take two forms: exemption from prerequisite courses, or recognition of courses in the bachelor's degree program
