Chair in Nutrition

Exercising international leadership in the field of nutrition

Thanks to its Chair in Nutrition, Université Laval plays a major role internationally in knowledge advancement, training and knowledge transfer in the food and health sector.

Healthy nutrition remains a key factor in the quality of life and long-term health of individuals. Despite significant scientific advancements over the past 60 years, nutrition remains a complex science and health food is still a controversial subject. For example, the link between the consumption of saturated fats and cardiovascular health, although a concept that is well entrenched in our current nutritional recommendations, was recently called into question.

The Chair in Nutrition has been in existence for nearly 20 years. Its objectives are to:

  • Contribute to training the next generation of young researchers in the field of nutrition and health in the province of Quebec and in Canada
  • Be an objective and respected voice in society's major debates on nutrition on the scientific, political and public levels
  • Serve as a promoter and leader in developing and conducting large-scale research projects on nutrition and health in Canada and internationally

The Chair's principal fields of research focus on the impacts of dietary fats and certain global approaches such as the Mediterranean diet on cardiometabolic risk factors associated with obesity. The Chair also supports research on food behaviour and its impact on weight control. Lastly, part of the Chair's research and knowledge transfer activities focuses on sports nutrition.
