NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Peatland Management

Develop knowledge on methods of ecological restoration and peatlands redevelopment

The NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Peatland Management develops responsible management tools such as knowledge on methods of ecological restoration and peatland development as well as on sphagnum cultivation. This Industrial Chair’s research work respects sustainable development and moves forward in partnership with the Canadian peat industry.

For its third mandate, the Chair in Peatland Management continues its mission, in accordance with the international biodiversity conventions, with interest in:

  • Optimal conditions for the propagation of minerotrophic peatland plant species (fens), including brown mosses and graminoids
  • Means conducive to the return of minerotrophic peatland species and bogs in ecosystems degraded by non-conventional types of disturbance or specific climatic conditions
  • The biology of sphagnum in terms of ecohydrological relationships and the reduction decay rates to increase yields in the sphagnum biomass being cultivated
